Towers of Hanoi Board Game


Our Intro
We created a board game inspired by the Towers of Hanoi, incorporating a mix of materials and fabrication techniques. This project showcases a variety of manufacturing methods. The base triangle was cut from pine wood, while the largest movable triangle was 3D-printed. Another triangle was precisely milled from aluminum and polished. The three pillars were made from steel, brass, and pine wood. To personalize the design, we laser-cut an individual's initials onto the base triangle, making it a one-of-a-kind creation.

3D Modelling(CAD)
We created a full assembly drawing of the Towers of Hanoi board game in CAD, ensuring accurate dimensions and proper alignment of all components. Each part, including the base triangle, movable pieces, and three pillars, was modeled separately and then assembled in the software. Different materials were assigned to the components to reflect the actual manufacturing process. The CAD model helped visualize the final design and check for any potential fit or alignment issues before fabrication.

Drawings
We created detailed technical drawings for each part of the Towers of Hanoi board game in CAD. These drawings included precise dimensions, material specifications, and manufacturing details for fabrication. Views such as top, front, and side were added to ensure clarity. For the laser-cut and milled parts, we included specific tolerances and cut paths. The drawings served as guides for machining, 3D printing, and assembly, ensuring accuracy in production.

CNC Milling
To fabricate the base and wooden triangles for the Towers of Hanoi board game using a CNC mill, we began by preparing the pine wood stock to ensure it was flat and of the correct thickness. We then securely clamped the wood onto the CNC machine's bed to prevent any movement during the cutting process. Using CAD software, we designed the triangular shapes with precise dimensions and generated the corresponding toolpaths. By carefully managing the feed rate and spindle speed, we achieved accurate cuts with smooth finishes, resulting in well-crafted wooden components for the game.

Laser Cutting
After fabricating the base and wooden triangles for the Towers of Hanoi board game using a CNC mill, we further customized the components by laser-cutting initials and numbers onto them. This process involved using a laser cutter to precisely etch the desired characters onto the wood surfaces, ensuring clean and accurate markings. Laser cutting is a popular method for creating detailed designs on wood, as it allows for intricate patterns and precise cuts.
This personalization added a unique touch to the game, enhancing its aesthetic appeal and making it truly one-of-a-kind.

Turning On A Lathe
To create the three pillars for the Towers of Hanoi board game, each was lathe-turned from steel, brass, and pine wood. After shaping, one end of each pillar was rounded off. This rounding facilitated the easy placement of the triangular pieces onto the pillars, enhancing both the game's functionality and aesthetic appeal.

First Stage Of Assembly
To assemble the base triangle and three pillars of the Towers of Hanoi board game, we used epoxy resin as an adhesive. Epoxy resin is known for its strong bonding properties and ability to securely join different materials, such as wood and metal. We applied the resin to the contact surfaces of the base triangle and each pillar, ensuring proper alignment, and allowed it to cure fully before handling. This method provided a durable and stable assembly, ensuring the game's structural integrity and longevity.

Manufacturing The Other Triangles
To create the additional triangles for the Towers of Hanoi board game, we employed various manufacturing techniques tailored to each material. One triangle was 3D-printed, another was laser-cut, a third was milled from aluminum and then polished, and the wooden triangle was crafted similarly to the base triangle. Each method was chosen to optimize the properties and aesthetics of the respective materials.
