Smart Pen Enclosure


Our Intro

Our project focused on developing a smart pen capable of recording handwritten notes and uploading them online without the need for scanning. The pen features a motion-tracking sensor to capture writing in real time. Our initial step was designing an enclosure to test the pen’s aesthetics, using existing electronics as a model. Multiple prototypes were 3D printed to refine the design. Once the core functionality was validated, we established a roadmap to develop custom electronics, ensuring seamless integration of the smart pen’s features.


Design of First Prototype

For the first prototype, we created a detailed CAD model to refine the design and ensure proper ergonomics. The CAD design incorporated space for existing electronics, allowing us to test functionality within the enclosure. Multiple iterations were made to optimize the shape, weight, and overall feel of the pen. Once finalized, the CAD model was used for 3D printing, enabling us to evaluate the prototype before moving forward with further development.











Design of Second Prototype

For the second prototype, we went back to the drawing board after realizing that the first design was too large and the components didn’t fit as intended. Instead of modifying the initial model, we started completely from scratch, focusing on a more compact and ergonomic design. The internal layout was carefully restructured to ensure all components fit seamlessly while maintaining a comfortable grip. This iteration required multiple adjustments to balance aesthetics, functionality, and practicality, ultimately leading to a more refined and efficient smart pen design.



Manufacturing the Second Prototype

The second prototype went through extensive iteration, with around 20 versions 3D printed to refine the dimensions and achieve the perfect fit for all components. Each iteration involved small but crucial adjustments to improve ergonomics, weight distribution, and assembly. Through this process, we ensured that the pen was both comfortable to use and functionally reliable. By the final version, the pen's basic functionality worked perfectly. With the enclosure finalized, our next step was to integrate custom electronics to enable the full smart pen capabilities.
